“Why not? Change the world!”

Ye-Iin Lee / Class of 17'

School of International Studies and Language & Literature

"Let's positively influence people and change the world through them.": This is the vision I have had ever since I was a 10th grader. I had to think a lot to make this vision come true. And then I got to know about Handong. Entering the school with an undeclared major and choosing it after experiencing each major sounded charming. Immediately, I got to have a desire to come to Handong, and by God's grace and guidance, I was able to enter the school.

In my freshman year, I did many activities in the school promotion team and took various major courses to get to know what the best for me would be. In this process, things started to become clear, and I figured out what I like, and am good at. I eventually chose management and visual design as my majors. However, once I actually started with my major courses, it was more difficult than I thought, and I started to worry about my vague future. As I struggle with this anxiety, I was comforted and received help from my friends and seniors in the same major.

I cannot miss talking about the professors in the management major when I talk about the ones who supported me. When I needed counselling from the professors about my future career, they made time to talk to me in their business. They also helped me in multiple ways to shape up my future plan. Through this process, I started to think about working in the marketing field. Now, I have this vision that I want to positively influence people through marketing and change the world through the people I meet.

Handong planted a specific vision of 'marketing with positive influence' in my life. I hope you, Handong people, prepare to become world-changers in God's ways. Now, I can confidently shout this: Why not? change the world!

"Law started for fun, now towards a lawyer with church-conflict as a speciality."

Eun-ho Park / Class of '16

School of Law

I did not choose the law major with a great vision and dream. Rather, I first started to dream about becoming a lawyer after the time of exploring majors in Handong. It might be a bit ridiculous, but the reason why I first chose law was just that I enjoyed "introduction to law" class. On the contrary, friends around me chose law with specific and realistic dreams like 'to study the law of unified Korea' or 'to help labourers who are fighting against big firms in industrial places.'

But then, as I study with these friends with specific dreams, I found myself also specifying my own vision. And now, after finishing my third year in Handong, I have this vision of being a 'peacemaker,' and a lawyer deals with church conflicts and heresy issues.

One day, a professor told me this: "When you study 6 law courses, you actually study 7. we learn about law through 6 courses, while we build our character and grow spiritually." Since we study a lot in the law major, the attitude of patience is required. Therefore, it will be helpful to think that you are not only obtaining knowledge but also growing with the character when you study law.

It is not a 'must' to have great vision and dream to study law. Each person will have a different time to find the vision; it may be like me after choosing the major, or even after going to law school. If you have a small interest in legal studies, I want to suggest you to first give it a try instead of putting a distance just because it seems hard.

“The International Situation in God's Eye”

Gu-won Yang / Class of ‘17

School of International Studies and Language & Literature

When we see the world situation, we can see entangled interests and ever-changing parameters. International relations studies try to sort them into each region, analyse it, and understand it. But, the international relations studies in HGU has two different things from the same studies in other universities.

Firstly, we do not stop at simply knowing and analysing the world situations and orders, but we try to find God's providence, order, and sovereignty in it. We see the world issues with the belief that God truly reigns the whole history. Furthermore, it expands to the meaning of following the command of "rule over every living creature." It is a big advantage to learn about politics and international relations in God's perspective.

Secondly, we learn how to learn 'together' instead of 'individually.' The ultimate goal of our department is to realise the value of 'togetherness.' HGU already settled a community-based policy in RC and team system, and it is the same in the academic field, with active team projects, discussions, debates, collaborative research, etc. Under the teaching of professors with practical knowledge and spirituality, we are learning the role of bridges that connect individuals and states and trying to realise the value of "togetherness."

God sees each and one of us as "jars of clay." He trains us and makes us into useful jars for his plan. I pray that students who are interested in international relations studies may come to the department and be shaped as God's precious jars that transform the world.

“Loving the Lord! Loving neighbours!”

Se-lin Park / Class of ‘17

School of Counselling Psychology & Social Welfare

I chose Handong for its uniqueness, and I am living a university life, trying to get the most out of it. I have been experiencing the things I would have never experienced in other schools, and through the experiences, I was able to feel various things and get lessons. Therefore, for me, Handong is a one and only precious school.

I love the slogan of my Counselling Psychology & Social Welfare department. It is 'Loving God! loving neighbours!" I was already into people and interested in child welfare. But after seeing the slogan, I got this vision to become a social worker; not just because of my interest, but because of the love of the Lord. I am now obtaining academic knowledge and learning about the attitude that a social worker is ought to have.

We not only get the knowledge here. Through the time we spend with the professors, we think about what attitudes we need as Christians, and how to grow in this. Professors advise with the wisdom we need to live in the world, comfort us, and sometimes allow us to reflect ourselves.

Also, the peers not only focus on their own academic and daily life, but we also help each other and talk about the concerns we have. These helped me to grow affections towards the school.

I now invite you to this place. I hope there are people wanting to care each other and 'study to give.' I also hope for the people who are curious about this place to experience the same feelings I had. I will be waiting for you.

"Process over Result, Love through People..."

Ju-yeon Choi / Class of ‘15

School of Communication Arts & Science

School of Communication Arts & Science might not feel like Handong for some people. I also remember the feeling of embarrassment when I first met the seniors with strong individuality. Maybe I expected "church brothers and sisters who are mild and caring." But now, I truly realised that CAS is the department where I truly can learn about the process instead of just the result and think intensely about what 'love' means.

In Visual and Performing Arts major, we, people with strong personalities, gather and work overnights to make the result like performances or movies. Although I have dreamed about it, once I face it, I see what I lack professionally, and I struggle with relationships too. This darkness sometimes pushes me to the heart of giving-up, but I get back up when I feel the weight of my responsibility in the artwork with dozens of people.

Sometimes, it is difficult to cooperate with the ones with different thoughts and from different backgrounds, but it is priceless to build relationships and learn with them. Before I came here, I always admire the sparkling results, but now, I learn in the process to reach the goal with responsibility.

I also think I am learning about love in this department. I face my own insufficiency as I study here. I was able to think more about how to love each individual, and about life as a Christian as I deal with it. If you are interested in performing arts or communication studies, please come to the department, and learn about the process of making 'our own.' Way to go!

“With neighbours, by prayer”

Ji-hye Choi / Class of ‘17

School of Spatial Environment System Engineering

Hello, I am Ji-Hye Choi, who wants to change the world through spatial environment design for neighbours.

I was interested in the mission in the construction field since I was a high school student, and I chose the school of spatial environment system engineering at HGU. While I was very confident in the first year, as I learn about new things in the major, I started to think about if I can really change the world through architecture. I was sometimes disappointed at myself and thought about changing my major to visual design or other majors.

But whenever I went through a hard time, friends in the same lab encouraged me, and I was able to focus on my study. They may seem like rivals, but in Handong, we all become companions to each other, growing together.

As I study architecture, I gained the academic knowledge, but I give special thanks for having my companions. I would not be able to go through the plannings that I had to do overnight, but I was able to finish it because I surrounded by precious people. I hope those Handong-people-to-be may have companions you can rely on as you share dreams and become architects who help others.

Sometimes, changing the world sounds too idealistic, and we have to give up on things we want to do after considering the reality. However, I want to encourage both Handong people and Handong-people-to-be to 'pray' instead of giving up. I also take each step with prayer and belief that God is the one leading my steps whatever I plan, as Proverbs 16:9 says. I will be praying for all of us to believe in the Lord, who will lead our future, regardless of the size of our dreams.

"Dreamt to become an engineer in the US, and it came true in Handong."

Seung-Yeon Cho / Class of ‘15

School of Mechanical and Control Engineering System

When I first chose my major, everyone was worried about me. They thought, for the person like me, who lived in the US ever since one was an 11-year-old girl, it would be too difficult to study mechanical engineering or control system engineering. But I loved math and science for my whole life and dreamed of contributing to technology development, so I chose my major with no hesitation. And this was possible because Handong allows students to have opportunities to freely choose majors regardless of their background.

After choosing the major, although I felt like I am lacking in math and science studies, professors helped all students to learn from the basics, one by one, through tutor session, study group, math camp, and prerequisite courses. And this prudential curriculum from the school side helped me not to give up. There are also many students giving up on the major and change to other majors, due to the endless assignments and exams we have. But at the same time, I experienced God's grace that allowed me to meet people to go through that and grow together. Now, as a senior, I see myself thinking about how to 'learn and share it with others' and grow as a God's worker.

I could keep the vision and make it come true because there were professors who always encouraged and handed me help and my peers who share the same vision. With professors and peers, if you do not give up, I believe you can continually grow in your dreams and visions despite any fears. If you want to learn how to design machines, control it, and change the world through it, I hope you take your first step in the School of Mechanical and Control System Engineering at Handong.

“The process of a liberal arts student to becoming a engineer in Handong"

Yoo Sang Jae/ Class of '17

School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering

I was a liberal arts student when I was in high school and was planning to major in psychology, but I got interested in computer engineering after taking a programing language course called 'Pi-Ssun' in the first year of exploring majors. However, I had a hard time choosing engineering major because math was difficult for me. I think I had a great fear of studying math and science alone.

I was able to solve my difficulties and worries by studying through TA sessions where students taught students. Also, I was able to get help on the C language, which is the basis of programming language, through the 'C language camp' hosted by my seniors during the vacation. After this camp, I learned a fact that this is a camp you do voluntary, not where seniors you know force you to do.

I was able to have an even more amazing experience while taking a major class called 'Computer Vision'. This course was a 100% English class where you learn programming about video processing. One student e-mailed his notes to the professor to share them with other students which everyone was able to study easily. I have had so many experiences like this while attending Handong University, and I realized that students of Handong University think of each other as colleagues who study together, not as competitors. Handong University students do not just say "Love, be honest" but together live and act to achieve this. I think I can grow to become an intelligent person within this culture and environment. I sincerely thank Handong for teaching me not only through words but also through actions.

“With the warmth of a Handong Student, With the passion of God"

Lee Chan Song/ Class of ‘15

School of Life Science

I strongly felt passion for God when I first entered Handong University, through an interview especially. Since the interview was held in the warmth of Handong people, no matter what the result was, I had a valuable time.

I cannot forget the moment right after the first class of the Life Science Department ever since I came to school. The reason was that the passion of the professor and students who continued to discuss even after the class was over. I thought I wanted to learn more and joined a student association called Logic Design INUS in the Department of Life Science. As an undergraduate listening to a graduate student-level presentation and experiencing in discussions about the topic with qualified feedbacks, I became more passionate toward life science. By this, I was able to feel proud once more for coming here.

Studying and majoring in life science is not easy. It is not an easy task of taking weekly major exams, reading essays, and presenting in English. I had a lot of difficulties by going through all of  this. However, I was able to find myself improving every semester by constantly trying this and that method, failing several times, and repetitively practicing the method until I knew how to do it.

I thank God for giving me this passion from the moment I came to Handong to study my major. I also thank Him for supporting me to endure the process. To those who dream of Handong, we invite you who want to change the world with a different passion. I sincerely welcome and bless you.

“Handong is our Vision Designer!"

Jeon Eun Woo/ Class of ‘14

School of Contents Convergence Design

There's something that professors say in common. "There are only a few people who are born with good talents but mostly succeed with a lot of effort." Professors encouraged that you can be a product designer good enough if you take the courage and challenge to do it.

When I was in my first year of exploring majors, I hesitated a lot whether to choose the product design because I had never experienced college entrance art exams. I agree that many students and parents hesitate to major in design because they did not study art before entering school. But the product design that I was studying in was a little different from what we usually thought it was. It was not just a field that deals with external beauty, but also a place you learn to increase the overall utility value of the product by considering its function and practicality. For this, we are studying the aesthetic parts as well as analyzing the experience of using the product before and after.

I am thinking deeply about my visions these days. When I sometimes concentrate on studying, I forget who I want to be. However, Handong teaches me not only in academic ability but also teaches me how to live as a Christian. And through this process, I am thinking of how to influence the world through design as a Christian.

I believe that not only me but also everyone who comes to Handong will find their own vision here. With the will of God, let's change the world through our own designs!

“I might not be able to change the world but that child’s life may change”

Seo Joo Eun/Class of ‘13

School of Creative Convergence Education

I once wandered thoughtlessly because I had no dream. I chose to do life science with a dream of becoming a pharmacist, but later I gave up my dream due to various situations. I decided to take a semester off because it was a dream I had dreamed of for a long time and didn't know what to do in the future.

While I was thinking about my career after taking a break from school, a line from a drama touched my heart. "I won't be able to change the world, but that child's life will. And that's going to change the world for him." This one line echoed in my heart. I started to dream of becoming a good teacher who can change the world for that one child. When I returned to school with this determination, I found out that there was a new TEP Christian teacher program and joined the program with great joy.

TEP is a small community gathered with a love for people. TEP friends have a clear motivation when starting the education and can also feel their love for the young-aged. Also, the 6 subjects that teach about Christian education confirm the value of Christian education in this collapsing generation. I was able to meet and socialize with my TEP friends every semester and became colleagues where we were able to share each other's concerns about what Christian education is, and I was able to meet with professors who became our mentors. The size of the TEP is small, but it is a community of learning where we rely and share with each other.

Through teaching practice, I learned that it is not the quality of education but doing it through love. If you have a love for young-aged students, we invite you to join us in TEP to learn and share love. I don't change the world myself, but I can make the world of children change brightly through love. I hope you will join us in this precious opportunity to change the world through children.

“It’s okay to fail, let’s do it together"

Yoon Jung Woo/ Class of '16

School of Creative Convergence Education

Hello! The best choice I made in my early 20s was to enter Handong University and take classes regardless of my major during my freshman year. Before coming to Handong, my career standard was "what I was good at." However, I was able to find out 'what I liked' during the free-major year and even challenged myself on areas that I didn't like and couldn't do well.

Actually, I was afraid of challenges in my life. However, the team professor and freshmen, freshmen leader, and team members always encouraged me, saying, "It's okay to fail," which I was able to try one thing at a time. I would have given up if I was alone. But thanks to the professors and seniors who gave me warm advices, and freshmen who took care of me, I didn't give up and walked my path.

Global Korean Studies Major is divided into two categories: Korean Language Teacher Certificate Track and Global Korean Studies Track. The Korean Language Teacher Certificate Track is a track that allows students to obtain a Korean Teacher's Certificate Level 3 for foreign learners. Foreigners can choose this major if they have TOPIK level 6. Our major is not only focused on education and Korean education, but also subjects related to the Korean culture. Ultimately, you can obtain a Level 3 Korean Teacher Certificate from the National Institute of Korean Language under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The Global Korean Studies Track is a track where you learn about the Korean culture, including Korean politics, economy, pop culture, history, and law. As there are so many foreigners who want to learn Korean due to the recent Korean Wave(韓流) centered on K-POP, drama, beauty, IT, and Sae-maul Movement in Korea, they will be able to serve as experts in Korean history and Korean culture around the world if they choose to major in Global Korean Studies. To becoming an expert in promoting Korea! We welcome you to the Global Korean Studies major.

“Math Statistics! A language that reads the World!

Lee Min Hyuk/ Class of ‘14

School of Creative Convergence Education

Galileo Galilei once said, "A huge book called Nature can only be read by people who know the language in the book. That language is math." It is a well-explains the importance of mathematics. Mathematics and statistics are essential when studying social phenomena. Because most of indicators that diagnose the phenomena are statistics. Therefore, I chose math statistics and economics as my majors with a dream of becoming an economist.

Math statistics has a great merit under Handong University's dual major system. It is more useful to gain mathematical thinking and statistical knowledge that can be used in my major than for a student to study a different major and focus on the first major like me. Also, given that it is a big burden to double major in maths or statistics at other schools, I think it is only the advantage of Handong University to be able to study math statistics like other majors without any burden.

Although math statistics major has recently opened in Handong University, there are many great professors. The professors explain the abstract concepts of math to our level and guide us until we understand them. Thanks to the meticulous care of these professors, I am enjoying my major subjects rather than having difficulty following them.

I saw many students hesitating to make a choice with a fear of math, even though they knew the benefits of studying math statistics in their major. I would like to tell them to not be afraid and challenge themselves. I hope you come to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Handong University and learn the 3rd language that reads the world. You won't regret it.

“Realizing a dream of becoming a smart factory expert through a student designed major"

Park Ye Eun/ Class of ‘14

School of Creative Convergence Education

I major in 'industrial engineering' as a student design major at the School of Creative Convergence Education. The reason why I majored in industrial engineering is because I became curious while working as a research assistant for the professor. I was able to have a special opportunity to carry out a joint study on manufacturing processes for about 3 years from my 2nd year, and thankfully, I became interested in the study of industrial engineering early on. However, in the process of the research, I felt like I reached my limits in business management and economics that I majored before, so I decided to focus more on industrial engineering and changed economics to 'industrial engineering' through the student design major.

I had a lot of worries before I majored in 'Industrial Engineering'. It was a burden for students and professors to design all the specific parts of the major, and I was afraid that my major would be ignored in society, and that I would have to continue fighting alone without my colleagues. However, I had a desire to really learn industrial engineering well and wanted to study in only what I needed. I am living my college life with no regrets because I was able to go forward and study what I really wanted by breaking off from the limitations of major through this major.

Through my major in 'industrial engineering', I was able to learn how to solve problems in the field of management, which is my first major, with technical engineering and scientific thinking. My dream is to become an expert in the field of smart factory. I think I was able to take this path from the result of converging business management and industrial engineering.

Student design major is a special opportunity of Handong to study what you really want. I think this particular opportunity is for those who can overcome fear and challenge themselves. I hope you achieve your dream through your major.
