| Programs & Opportunities for Spiritual Growth |
|
|
Training of and growth in students' spiritual life is a fundamental part of Handong's
vision for cultivating world leaders. At Handong we do not leave spiritual growth
to chance. Rather we provide intentional, purposeful, and specific opportunities
for nurturing this essential part of our students' lives. Following are examples
of the many opportunities available for spiritual nurture and growth.
BIBLICAL STUDIES in the Classroom and Beyond
Many structured programs and Biblical courses are offered through the school's
curriculum: Christian Basics, Creation Science, and Christian Worldview, to
name a few (see also the School of General Studies for more information). Additionally,
biblical training programs and cell-group bible studies are offered by Handong
Global University Church and also by numerous professors and groups such as
Campus Crusade for Christ. Many Handong Teams, and even informal groups of roommates
or dorm-mates, meet for bible studies, praise and worship, and prayer.
HANDONG GLOBAL UNIVERSITY CHURCH
- Sunday Morning Service
Handong Church provides Sunday morning worship,
praise, and preaching for all students who
stay on campus for the weekends. Many professors
also attend and the church has its own elders
and pastoral team. It is organized as a fully
functioning church, with a focus on its youthful
student population. A Sunday evening service
is also offered.
- Sunday Afternoon Worship - includes a time
of extended prayer, praise and celebration
of our Jesus Christ as Risen King. Seeking
creativity and diversity, these services are
composed of various testimonies, sermons,
intercession and special praises. This service
is a more contemporary style of worship compared
to our more traditional Sunday morning services.
- Handong Church Choir & Chamber Orchestra
- The choir and chamber orchestra of Handong
Global University Church are part of our many
music ministries. It is a student ministry
that seeks to bring glory to God through music
and voice, striving to give our congregation
a 'taste of heaven'. God has blessed these
students with great talent that is a true
blessing to our whole community.
HANDONG GLOBAL UNIVERSITY CHAPEL PROGRAMS
The chapel program at Handong is both active and dynamic. It plans and oversees
many important parts of Handong life :
- Wednesday Chapel Services - feature a time
of praise and worship, prayer, and usually
a sermon from a visiting pastor or guest speaker.
Local, national, and international speakers
are invited. Occasionally there are also musicians,
concerts and dramas performed. Chapel attendance
is required by all students through Junior
year and forms a solid foundation for spiritual
growth and nurture throughout the week.
- Bible Study Programs - Several programs
are coordinated through the Chaplain's office:
Group Bible Study (GBS), Leadership Training
Course (LTC), informal bible studies offered
by professors (book studies, character studies,
topical studies, etc.), and many others.
Handong First Hour Program - The First Hour
of Handong, from 7-8AM, is a time of prayer
and meditation on a focused passage of scripture.
A few words of encouragement and challenge
are also offered by the chaplain's staff.
However, the focus is on scripture meditation
and personal prayer and reflection.
Through this early-morning prayer and meditation,
students are able to find peace within their
busy schedules and strength for the day's
many activities. Men and Women who might be
experiencing difficulty or hardships in their
life, can gain daily courage and strength
at this time.
- Handong Cell Groups - QT (quiet time) groups
are small groups that meet together for fellowship
and for sharing our spiritual journeys throughout
the week. The times that these groups meet
are determined by the student's schedules,
but most groups meet Sunday afternoons, between
the morning and evening worship services.
This is a casual and relaxing time of sharing
and fellowship.
- Handong Discipleship School (HDS) - HDS
is a special, focused program to train students
in the Christian faith and a life filled with
Holy Spirit. It is offered as a regular course
under the category of Character Building.
This course involves 16 weeks of classes,
small-group meetings, and intense training
in community life. After the initial training
period, students go off-campus into the local
community, or abroad, for short mission trips.
This time of outreach is an opportunity for
students to grow in their understanding of
different peoples, actively serve others,
and gain a clearer vision for their lives.
Thus far, approximately 100 students over
the past three semesters have taken part in
the training courses, and have participated
in outreach ministry to places such as Indonesia,
Vietnam, Uzbekistan, Fiji, China and other
countries.
- Student Counseling - Chaplain staff are
available to assist students in their spiritual
growth and development, and to provide confidential
and personal counseling when needed.
