After twelve years of persistent research, Kim Soon-Kwon, known as Dr. Corn, succeeded in breeding black corn. Do Myoung-Sool, a professor of the School of Life Science in Handong Global University, and his team discovered in their animal experiments that black corn extract has demonstrated effectiveness in improving diabetes. In the experimental results, they have identified the possibility of lowering diabetic figures without weight gain. These results will be published in the Korean Journal of Food Nutrition.
Moreover, they demonstrated that black corn extract, which contains a large amount of anthocyanin, improves insulin signaling pathways in the liver and have positive effects on the regulation of blood glucose levels and glucose metabolism through the down-regulation of macrophage infiltration and expression of proinflammatory cytokines in adipocytes. POSCO, a supporter of Handong Global University and the bioenergy research of Dr. corn, is promoting a joint patent application.
Black corn, which has been developed by Dr. Kim, is a completely different maize variety from the traditional Korean purple corn. The newly developed corn is one of many eaten by American Indians who never had cancer. The corn cob is a dark black and contains a large amount of anthocyanin. This safe and high-yielding corn will be possible for medical extraction of the diabetic regulation substance. We expect to have a natural diabetes regulation, if people eat a delicious black waxy corn. Also, Dr. Kim is in the process of breeding black honey corn. We expect the natural diabetes regulation after drinking a water of the black corn cob.
The adaptability breeding test was promoted in Korea and Northeast of China during the 12-years breeding term. During the winter period, the breeding was promoted in China’s Hainan Island and the International Corn Foundation Bio Center in Cambodia. The most difficult problem was that ear rot breaks out in the Korean Peninsula. Another problem was that the black gene did not express a normal gene according to Mendel’s law, resulting in many trials during research.
Black corn is expected to have an effect on cancer prevention, especially, the foraged black corn. This corn was expected to help foot-and-mouth disease and avian influenza virus resistance. It has been permitted to have a forage examination, but it failed 5 times at the government’s research fund supporting task. Rather, the government focuses on supporting research for complete prevention vaccines.
Professor Kim Soon-Kwon is an international eco-friendly crop breeding veteran who breeds corns that has the power to endure on the basis of symbiosis theory for 50 years. This year, black waxy corn and honey corn will begin pilot productions in an experimental farm lab of Handong Global University and promote a tasting meeting.
