On February 27, the groundbreaking ceremony of ‘Happiness Dormitory and Welfare Building’ was held. This dormitory is the tenth dormitory at Handong Global University. Fund of 13.8 billion won (about 13 million US dollars) were provided to build the 8,464 m² building. There are 10 floors with the capacity of 136 rooms to accept 538 people.
The dormitory rooms will house four people. There are two rooms for the physically challenged. Several other facilities were in the blue prints: a seminar room, a health service room, a prayer room and a community lounge.
In addition, the welfare building that is connected with the Happiness Dormitory was built with about 3.9billion won (about 3 million US dollars). It is 2,358m² in size and has a hospital, a restaurant, a convenience store, a café, a bookstore, a stationary store, a fast food store, and a snack bar.
President Soon-Heung Chang said, “The dormitories of Handong Global University are a community based system to converge learning and life for holistic education. By forming a community to pursue learning and life our school aims to nurture godly human character and values to pursue learning and life.”
The dormitory was established after being selected as a supporting project called Happy Dormitory, hosted by the Korean Foundation for the Promotion of Private Schools. It took one year and six months for the construction to be completed. The project supports the establishment of university dormitories for improving housing conditions and reducing housing costs. The Korean Foundation for the Promotion of Private Schools named Handong Global University as the designed corporation. There is a special law for dormitories. The management rights will be transferred to Handong Global University after thirty years of the dorm’s operation.
