The Life-long Education Center of Handong Global University opened a course called Peer Support Provider from March for mentally disabled people themselves to assist neighboring peers who also suffer from mental illness by working with Brook Stream, a mental rehabilitation facility.
‘Peer Support Provider’ refers to a person who once suffered from mental illness, experienced restoration and is now ready to help and support other mentally disabled people. In order to act as peer supporters, not only for relying on private experience, effective peer support is required through professionalism. For the course, the faculty of the Counselling Psychology & Social Welfare including Professor Sukhee Jung, professional doctors of Pohang Medical Center, researchers of the Counseling Center of Handong Global University, family lecturers for mental disabilities, and the CEO of (Corp) Fragrance People will participate in the course as lecturers.
In the first course, nine mentally disabled people were selected through interview. The participants will receive twelve-weeks of education on theory, including meanings and job descriptions, understanding mental illness, the value of mental rehabilitation, the mentally disabled and their families, mentally disabled in the work place, and the counselling theory of ‘Peer Support Providers’. In addition, there is a six-week practice program consisting of counseling, sentiment support service, encouragement, shelter supportive service, and educational lecturers.
The training will be from 10 to 12 on Fridays starting from March 3rd 2017. The recipients of the mentally disabled program will serve in the role of lecturers to help combat prejudice towards the mentally disabled and deliver a restoration message in Neuropsychiatry and Mental Health related institutions.
