A new on-campus medical clinic has opened at Handong Global University (President Soon-Heung Chang).  The clinic offers treatment in internal medicine, pediatrics, dermatology, psychiatry, orthopedics, and ophthalmology.  The official name of the clinic, ‘Boaz Medical,’ is named after Boaz, the wealthy man who helped Naomi and Ruth recover from hardships.

Boaz Medical is a full-service clinic located on the third floor of the new student welfare building, replacing the minor clinic, or the nurse’s station, that was located in the basement of Bethel Hall.

The clinic is run by Dr. Jun Tae Ko, the current director of pediatrics at the Women’s i-Hospital, and a certified nurse.  Dr. Ko receives patients in his office weekdays from 2 to 6pm.  The nurse’s station office hours are the same as before.  Inquiries can be made by calling 054-260-3022.

The following is an Interview with Dr. Ko.

Q:  “What was the occasion that brought you to Handong?”

“I have been working at Sunlin Hospital from 2002 to 2011, and Handong University has always been on my mind.  I am also a guest professor for the School of Creative Convergence Education.  The main reason why I came to Handong was not only because President Chang invited me to come, but because I personally had a desire to.  I wish to treat my patients with the mindset of an evangelist and a missionary.

Q: “What sort of treatments will you be offering?  Will the clinic be run in the same way as that of a regular hospital?”

“I have to first admit that due to the limitations as an on-campus clinic, we would not be able to offer certain medical services that are on par with that of hospitals off-campus.  However, I believe our clinic’s responsibilities lie in the treatment of acute illnesses, such as the flu and enteritis (inflammation of the intestine) and also in identifying diseases.  In other words, our job holds significance in that we can either advise students with serious conditions to visit the hospital, or that we ourselves can prescribe medication to those who can recover within a matter of days.  I have experience not only as a pediatric cardiac specialist, but also as a general practitioner.  After receiving my license as specialist at Seoul National University Hospital, I served three years as a public health doctor, and one year in family medicine.  I believe that my colorful experience will aid me in treating the students.

Q:  “There will probably be a high demand for orthopedic treatment due to the various sports activities that happen on campus.  What are some specific types of orthopedic treatments that students can receive?”

“As I have mentioned, there are limits placed on an on-campus clinic, and we won’t be able to treat certain serious injuries such as fractures, or provide casts, or surgery.  In short, we will not be able to provide the exact same medical services sought from a regular orthopedic clinic.  However, we do have the advantage of being able to treat patients with less serious injuries swiftly, without having to travel a great distance.  Additionally, we will try our best to help students receive the best medical services by working together with local orthopedic clinics.

Q:  “Is there something that you wish to do with other certain members of Handong University?”

“During my time at Sunlin Hospital, I went on several mission trips to places such as Mongolia and Sri Lanka.  I have also provided free medical services to foreigners and to the needy in urban areas.  I have been told that Handong students actively participate in outreach activities, and I wish to join them when I get the opportunity.  I also have studied Christian counseling and family ministry, and I would like to deliver a lecture that would be beneficial to the students.”

Q:  “Is there anything else that you would want to add?”

“The name of our clinic is Boaz Medical.  We have named the clinic after Boaz, who helped Naomi and Ruth recover from their troubles.  Likewise, I wish that students who visit our clinic will not only be healed and restored in their bodies, but also in their hearts.”
