The Gyeongsang Province Educational Donation Center of Handong Global University (Director Jung Sook-Hee) held the ‘Major Experience Activity at Handong Global University’ on July 7th. 161 students from the 3rd grade of Pohang Sin-Heung Middle school participated in the college visiting program, which included a ‘find my major’ aptitude test (Handong Global University counseling center), two major experiences (‘A’ and ‘B’) and a small-group mentoring program with college students.
In particular, the ‘Find the Secret Key!’ program, held by the faculty of social work, was meaningful time spent to address bias in developing countries, and to bring forth observation that comprehensively understands strengths and weaknesses. In addition, the Department of Law conducted mock trials with students to help them understand legal principles and procedures, as well as providing meaningful help in navigating legal professions.
Moreover, the Department of Computer Science provided ‘Learning Programming with Code Blocks,’ while the Department of ICT entrepreneurship, held ‘Experience Virtual Reality!’ And the Department of Management offered, ‘Until the iPhone is Introduced to all the World,’ and the ‘Our Growing Up Dream Tree!’ program was planned by the Department of Counseling.’ Still, the Department of Press sponsored, ‘Tasting Advertisement Planning,’ and the Department of Performance offered, ‘Acting is not a Joke!’ With these programs, students had ample time to experience many majors, while exploring the features of each department. During the small group mentoring time, students had the chance to talk directly with the enrolled college students about their chosen majors and other issues related to college life.
Park Soo-Young, a student of Shin-heung Middle School, said, “The most fun thing I did while visiting the university was getting to talk with college students. Also, today, I could choose and experience two different majors, which helped me think about my future, as my dream is not yet clear.”
Lee Soon-Ja, a teacher of Shin-heung Middle School, also said, “Middle school students often study without knowing their dreams. I think this opportunity helps students very much.”
Jung Sook-Hee, a director of the center, stated, “Experimental activities are more important than any other educational program. I hope that this event, of getting to directly experience various college majors, will give students an opportunity to design their specific career path.”
In order to create a culture of education and donation at the local level, we, the Gyeongsang Province Educational Donation Center of Handong Global University, are continuously searching for education donation agencies and organizations of Gyeongsang Province (Gyeongnam, Gyeongbuk, Daegu, Busan, and Ulsan), and are actively engaged in activities such as the development of institutional customizable programs, matching of beneficiaries to programs, and so on.
Furthermore, beginning from this year’s first day of class, we will operate an educational donation model school and curriculum with the resources from educational donations of the local community.
