July 20th, (local time), Handong Global University (President Chang Soon-Heung) opened a local center of Handong Global University at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HUJ), established in 1918, and is one of the most prestigious universities in the world, with alumni including a large number of Israeli prime ministers and Nobel Laureates. HUJ is not only ranked one of the top 100 universities in the world, but is also famous for Einstein’s contribution to the founding of the university, including the donation of his property.
Recently, the university has attracted worldwide attention due to its many job opportunities and added value through entrepreneurship education. Based on outstanding research achievements, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem Technology Transfer Center ‘Yissum’ has 7,000 intellectual property rights and 2,000 invention patents. Business ideas generated by the university are still being patented, and professors and students are generating profit from product and ideas sales to customers all over the world. According to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the total sales of technology transfer from Yissum alone is soon to reach one billion dollars. (About 1.1 trillion Won.)
President Chang Soon-Heung visited the Hebrew University of Jerusalem for the first time in July 2015 to discuss ways of exchange and cooperation. He has continued other exchanges with Israeli staff and students over the past two years. Based on this, in March 2017, the International Director of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Vice President of the Business School visited Handong Global University to conclude academic exchange agreements between the two universities. Thus, the need for Handong Global University to establish a local presence at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem has been met, ready to maintain continuous cooperation and future exchange.
The opening ceremony began with the greetings of President Asher Cohen of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (elected), and President Chang Soon-Heung of Handong Global University. The ceremony was held in the order of announcement, from the director of the center regarding plans of the local center of Handong Global University, to a signboard hanging ceremony. Following that were words from President Chang Soon-Heung, President Asher Cohen, Vice President of Advancement and External Relations Yossi Gal, Dean of Rothberg International School Malka Rappaport, and Dean of International Affairs Jane Turner, as well as statements from professors and staffs from both universities. Local media representatives of Israel also made an appearance.
President Chang Soon-Heung stated, “Although Handong Global University is a small university in Korea’s easternmost coastal city, I will try diligently to grow the small, yet strong university, like Israel has [as a nation.]” In addition, “We will cultivate talented people with the three representative spirits of Israel: the spirit of Chutzpah, which boldly challenges to solve problems through this center, the spirit of Roshgadol, which is to do best in everything, and the spirit of Tikkun Olam, which strives to make a better world.”
Through this center, Handong Global University will carry out various activities such as start-ups and entrepreneurship exchange programs, seminars on peace and coexistence, history and international relations, as well as the dispatch of staff, students, etc.
