The ‘Softrobotics’ team, which consists of Handong Global University's Mechanical & Control Engineering students, received an Undergraduate Paper Award at the 2017, 32nd Control·Robot·System Academy Symposium. The winners are Mechanical & Control Engineering seniors: Yoon Joo-seon, Kim Yeong-chan, and Kim Mi-joo. The symposium was held from May 11th to 13th at Daemyung Delfino Resort in Gangwon-do, Sokcho.
The team received guidance from Mechanical & Control Engineering professor Kim Jae-Hyo and wrote a thesis on the ‘Development of Pneumatic Gloves for Rehabilitation and Evaluation of Hemiplegia Patients’ for the capstone design class of the last spring semester.
The research is a result of students making a robot for hemiplegia patient’s finger rehabilitation and testing patients with the robot. The robot is in airpocket form and has the advantage of active rehabilitation because it is easy for patients to use personally, especially when compared to existing robots. The research was progressed in cooperation with Pohang Sanatorium and the hospital actively asked for a follow-up study.
Student Yoon Joo-seon said “I progressed the research at Human Interface Laboratory and could make good result by getting help from other graduate students. Referring to the research of the friends who worked together with me, I am thankful.”
Professor Kim Jae-Hyo said “Students participated in the research sincerely. Adjusting, changing, and listening to voices of constructive criticism in the field is what graduates do and they experienced that.” The professor continued, “I am proud of them for having results like this, for not giving up, and for visiting the field. To be commercialized, it needs to be improved more, but the feedback from the field is so good that I believe they can create good results.”
