On the 28th, Handong Global University Gyeongbuk East Coast Sustainable Energy and Environmental Convergence Talent Development Team (Director Prof. Jae Young Lee) hosted special lectures of overseas experts of energy and environment by inviting William Magwood, the secretary general of OECD Nuclear Energy Agency, and Yeon Hee Hah, the NEA director-general.
In this lecture, Secretary general William Magwood introduced that nuclear power development contributed greatly to the reduction of carbon emissions and stable base power after the Paris Climate Convention through the topic of ‘Challenge and opportunity of nuclear energy’, and that the activities of various OECD nuclear power organizations to improve the safety of Korean nuclear power plants after the Fukushima nuclear accident. In addition, he proposed a future development direction of nuclear energy through N2050, a roadmap for nuclear energy technology development.
Following a lecture by William Magwood, the director of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency’s Radiation Protection and Personnel-based Nuclear Safety Bureau, Dr. Yeon Hee Hah said that raising the ability to solve reality problems is the essence of studying and pointed out the importance of constant effort without acknowledging their limitations. In addition, Dr. Hah emphasized to the students that investing more time and effort is ultimately just a competitive ability and that eagerness and desperation are a genuine motivation.
Director Jae Young Lee said, “This event was a valuable opportunity for Handong Global University, to expand cooperation with international organizations, including the OECD, and for students to get active interest and participation in international energy and environmental issues.”
Young Ok Kim(Handong Global University International Law School) who attended the lecture said, “During this time, I learned about the international leadership of William Magwood and the will and efforts of Dr. Yeon Hee Hah. I decided to put more effort to enter the international organization and career development.”
