On January 15th, at the 6th 3D printing utilization competition co-hosted by Jong-Bae Lee, Dae-Hoon Park, and Hee-Kyung Song, members of the National Assembly, and conducted by the Korea 3D Printing Service Association, Handong Global University’s (President Soon-Heung Chang) ‘Simple’ won the start-up grand prize, the Minister Prize, awarded by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

The team, Eun-Bin Seo (16’, Enterprise Development & Systems Engineering and Performance and Film Arts), Jeong San (14’, ICT Convergence and Management), Yoon-gee Jang (13’, Visual Design and GE) and Academic advisor Chang-Beom Choi of the School of Entrepreneurship and ICT, developed ‘Selfot,’ an ‘Internet-of-Things’ based smart flowerpot.

An IoT (Internet-of-Things) technique was grafted onto the Selfot in order to enable users to better manage the condition of the plant. Also, experiencing the preciousness of life from a growing plant, while utilizing 3D printing for studying the plant’s interior, makes practicing and learning about IoT possible.

The competition was sponsored by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, the Korea Institute of Startup & Entrepreneurship Development, the National IT Industry Promotion Agency, and the Korea Student Aid Foundation.  The competition was held in order to share examples of how fusing 3D printing technology with new techniques can put new ideas to practical use, while promoting the discovery of young people’s start-up products and services.

Meanwhile, HGU School of Global Entrepreneurship and ICT, selected by PRIME (Program for Industrial needs-Matched Education), trains entrepreneurs that correspond with social demands and professional manpower with ICT Convergence capabilities. Makerspace, operated by GE&ICT faculty, is contributing to young start-ups by bringing customized, industry-demand ideas discovered through an in-the-field curriculum into reality.
