Keumwon Inc. (POSCO’s outsourcing partner firm, CEO Jin-Hong Kim) delivered a scholarship of $30,000 to HGU’s (President Soon-Heung Chang) HILS (Handong International Law School) foreign students. Keumwon Inc. has donated scholarships to HILS for 4 consecutive years, with this year’s scholarship going to 7 foreign students attending the school.
On March 23rd, while attending the scholarship delivery ceremony held in HILS’ moot courtroom, CEO Jin-Hong Kim mentions, “Our region’s prestigious university, Handong, has been cultivating global people of talent beyond our borders. I hope they will train to be international legal professionals with global capabilities and with sensitivity in the global arena.”
HILS was established in 2002, as the first school in Korea to advocate a school of American law, and has produced 369 attorneys across 7 states in America. The acceptance rate for bar examinations is outstanding, exceeding 70%. 6 students are foreigners, making up 11% of the total 53 freshmen who entered this year.
HILS is providing master’s courses in American Law, inviting foreign students every year to foster the pro-Korean foreign students of global talent. The aim for inviting and educating foreign students is to train them as people of fundamental talent, not only in legal professions, but also in the development of the economy.
Vinira Hok of Cambodia, a recipient of Keumwon’s scholarship for two years during her college career, is now working as a US attorney in Cambodia’s main law firm after passing the US bar examination last February.
Also, Vladimir Samsonov of Uzbekistan received a scholarship as a freshmen entering HILS after graduating from HGU. Last month during the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, Samsonov worked as a steering committee member in the field of consulting and promoting for the IOC (International Olympic Committee). Samsonov said, “Using my fluent English and Korean, I want to contribute to the development of my country by being in charge of international judicial affairs in our law firms.”
HILS, which gives US law and international law lectures in 100% English, is achieving exceptional results in many mock trials inside and outside Korea, and also achieves high ranks in the INC (International Negotiation Competition), IAM (International Arbitration Moot), WTO/FTA mock trial, HLC (Humanitarian Law Competition), etc. In particular, HILS placed first during the international humanitarian law mock trial co-hosted by the Korean Red Cross and ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross) in both 2013 and 2014.
