Students of School of Law, Handong Global University (President Chang Soon-heung), Jin Kim (Senior), Jaewoo Sung (Junior), and Heejin Kim (Junior), won the grand prize at the ‘10th Red Cross International Humanitarian Law Moot Court Competition’ held on September 15th, 2018 at the Seoul National university Graduate School of Law. In addition, the team received the Best Memorial Prosecutor award through the written memorial they submitted before the moot court.
The competition is held jointly by the Korean Red Cross, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the Seoul National University Public Service Human Rights Law Center, and sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defense, and the Ministry of Justice. The Grand Prize winner will compete in the ‘17th International Moot Court Asia-Pacific Regional Competition’ held in Hong Kong in March 2019.
Moot courts are conducted under the theme of armed conflict between armed groups desiring independence within a virtual country and the national armed forces restricting them. In the preliminary round, Handong Global University team took on the role of a prosecutor and defendant once each and proceeded to both the semi-finals and the final as the prosecutor. Handong Global University won the contest by demonstrating the responsibility of the commander who violated international humanitarian law.

The students who participated in this competition are members of Law and Advocacy (LnA), an academic society at Handong Global University. Jin Kim, the team leader of International Humanitarian Law team within the academic society, said, "We prepared for the competition asking for God’s strength and wisdom and we are thankful that we could turn all glory to God alone through this competition. In addition, we couldn’t have done all of this by ourselves. We give thanks to all members and seniors of LnA and professors who have helped us on our journey and especially to Professor John T. Shin, our team professor.”
Professor John T. Shin quoted, “While coaching this team, I was blessed in many ways. Certainly, winning the competition was a blessing, but the greater blessing was seeing how each team member trusted less in themselves and more on God. I hope and pray that our trust in God grows day by day."
