Handong Global University hosts the 7th Handong Startup Idea Contest(RPM)

Handong Global University (President Chang Soon-Heung) hosted the '7th Handong Startup Idea Contest (RPM)' with the City of Pohang on the 3rd of October at Ramér Wedding Convention.

 

   RPM stands for Revolution Per Minutes and means that in the given few minutes of presentation, one needs to put out a revolutionary idea. This contest has been hosted since 2014 to contribute to solving the problems in the world through a revolutionary idea. It also provides opportunities to heighten the interest of youths and citizens towards startup and to challenge continually.

This year's contest has been proceeded with the topic of 'Runway' and with the scores of the judges and the audience, three final winning teams were chosen. The judges and the audience listened to 11 teams for five minutes each in round 1 and added up the scores later which only led six teams to advance to round 2, the Q&A round.

In the 2nd round, each of six teams had five minutes of answering questions from the judges and the audience and went through the 2nd evaluation which only left the final three teams. These final teams had the privileges of receiving 1.000.000 KRW each as the prize money, Prize of Pohang City and Prize of the President. The final winning team had the special privilege of going to Silicon Valley or Israel for three months as an expat.

Result of this contest shows that the following three teams have received the prize: ▲Carrot Coding Team (1st place) demonstrated the block-type coding training products that anyone can find to be easy and fun ▲WIC Team that demonstrated the last siren and the life bell to save the fall victim ▲Simple Fit Team that introduced making our own fashion item platform through custom design.

For the judges, there were CEO of In objects, Kwon Seok-Won from Silicon Valley, CEO of Unicorn Incubator, Kim Jin-Ah,  King's Bay Capital Partner and the Head of the Office of Business Development Department, Shin Myeong-Chul, Director of Media Technology Institute of SK Telecom, Lee Jong-Min, Team leader from the marketing support team of Korea Electric Power Technology Global Marketing Center, Park Jung-Hoon participated.

 

 

   Winning this contest, the Carrot Coding Team is getting the privilege to go to the Silicon Valley or Israel as an expat for three months and receive a round-trip ticket, three months of local accommodation and a part of living expenses. It will be a great opportunity for the students to experience the variously advanced startup culture, learn what to prepare for practical startup by learning from the Silicon Valley and Israel, a hotspot for active startup activities. Students who were awarded first place were able to visit the successful startups, meet various local entrepreneurs, do an internship and listen to lectures related to startup training.

Pohang City and Handong Global University hosted this contest together to promote the startup that could be a new engine for growth of Pohang. 60mph, organized by the Corporate Support Office in Handong Global University, Gyeongbuk Center for Creative Economy and Innovation, Pohang Center for Creative Economy and Innovation, University Job Center in Handong Global University and etc have sponsored.

 

 

   Meanwhile, Handong Startup Idea Contest ( Revolution Per Minutes ) had 14 teams in the starting year, 11 teams in the second year, 14 teams in the third year, 13 teams in the fourth year, 15 teams in the fifth year, the 14th team in the sixth year participated and introduced various items and ideas. One of the teams that were awarded in the first year combined the technology to monitor rehabilitation information data through its own electromyography sensor and HRS sensor and the technique of the wearable leg support device which can bend the knee. This is a device that provided information on whether rehabilitating patients are working in the right posture and will be used in the future field of self-recovery, medical diagnosis, and digital health care. With this technique, they won the grand prize for the Ministry of Student Affairs at the '2015 Startup Promoting Contest Using Defense Technology'.

Also, in the second year's RPM, Team 'Mplus Cosmetics' won the first place with the item that provided a skin solution tailored to the customers' skin, including diagnosis, prescribing and care according to 16 types of skin. This team also received an incentive award at 'Bio Startup Contest' hosted by the Korea Health Industry Development for its product that customized skin care products that utilize the consumer data.

In the 5th year contest, Team 'Lobbied' introduced an internet platform that helps select the best lawyers through bidding, and started its service in December last year. If the client posts the case to Lobbied, lawyers will bid, and the tender proposal will include the case analysis, recent cases winning, and fees. Then, the client can look at the proposal and choose the right lawyer.
