Handong Global University, conducts joint curriculum with Myanmarese universities

- Expansion of cooperation with the Myanmarese universities, President Chang Soon-heung lectures on "Importance of university education in developing countries"

- Urban Problem Solving and 'Smart City' Building Capacity Building through Short-Term Education of Professors of Spatial Environmental System Engineering at Handong Global University

 

   From last January 14th to 17th, Handong Global University (President, Chang Soon Heung) conducted a UNESCO UNITWIN joint curriculum for faculty members and students in Yangon Technological University (hereinafter YTU), University of Computer Studies, Yangon (hereinafter UCSY) and the two universities of Mandalay (MTU: Mandalay Technological University and TUM: Technological University, Mandalay). In addition, the Mandalay Technical University (MTU) has also signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that pledges technology development and future cooperation of the two universities.

   On the 14th and 15th of January, President Chang Soon-heung and eight team members (four professors and four external experts) visited YTU and UCSY, which signed MOU with HGU since 4 years ago and had a continuous cooperative relationship, discussed on strengthening and expanding cooperation through discussions between the presidents. In particular, President Myint Thein of YTU, proposed the expansion of cooperation to solve the urgent problem of electric energy in Myanmar along with the existing construction field; President Mie Mie Thet Thwin, of UCSY asked for cooperation in cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), which is essential for the fourth industrial revolution; And President Chang Soon-heung of Handong Global University responded positively to both cooperation suggestions. "We had a five-year program in the Department of Architecture at YTU, but we were not able to properly educate the students in urban planning, so we requested special lectures on urban planning and the special lectures were a great help to YTU’s students of  Department of Architecture. We ask for cooperation with the urban planning sector in the future as well. We want to strengthen the field with the help of the Handong University’s UNTWIN business," said Tingqui Shew, Head of YTU Department of Architecture. In addition, Professor Chang gave a lecture to professors and students under the title of 'Success Stories of Korean Higher Education' at YTU. He explained the importance of university education by explaining cases where universities identified and provided key issues facing the country and society and nurtured talents that can solve them and contribute to national development.

   In addition, professors of Spatial Environment System Engineering of Handong Global University, including professor Koo Cha-Mun and professor Kim Ju-Il, presented a smart city as a way to analyze and solve various urban problems such as traffic, housing, and industrial development through short-term emphasis lectures at YTU. Following Myanmar's first city, Yangon, on 16th and 17th, they visited Mandalay, the second city of Myanmar, which boasts about its history and tradition, and selected Smart City, which is being promoted at the city level, as the main theme and signed a MOU with Mandalay Technical University for a continuous cooperative relationship.

   In addition, short-term education on Smart City was conducted for Professors of Mandalay Technical University as well as professors of nearby universities. As a specialist, Dr. Seo Deoksu explained the overall concept of Smart City and the global pilot cities. Professor Trinn Tuhang of Dong Duk Dang University of Vietnam introduced examples of Vietnamese cities. Representative Cho Seonghyeon of Korean Space Work, I promoted an engine that implements an architectural design optimized for the situation of Myanmar using an artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Professor Yi Yi Twue of Mandalay Technical University said, "We conducted an IT education program through Handong Global University’s UNITWIN program which was very necessary for us. In the future, I would like to ask for cooperation not only in urban engineering but also various fields such as mechanical engineering, urban engineering, smart city, regional development and agriculture. The two professors who participated in the program came from a university in the village near the Indian border, which took more than five hours, and expressed their strong desire to have such a special lecture at their university as well. On the following 17th, we visited the Technical University of Mandalay (TMU) and finished the short-term education on Smart City successfully and promised to continue to cooperate with each other in order to implement the joint curriculum.

The UNITWIN joint curriculum is aimed at promoting the sustainable development capacity of universities in developing countries through the implementation of mid-to-long term joint curriculum programs for Cambodia, Nepal, Mongolia, Myanmar and Uzbekistan. It is a business to cultivate core management talents that can contribute to their countries development with the understanding of international economic and managerial environments. Myanmar aims to nurture talents capable of exploiting computer programming and ICT technology while possessing expertise in the field of construction and technology. In October 2015, the first MOU was signed with the University of Computer Studies (UCSY), and a joint training program focusing on expanding partner institutions and delivering expertise and technology in the construction field has been implemented since 2015. In Myanmar, the partner institutions of Handong Global University are University of Computer Science, Yangon (UCSY), Yangon Technical University (YTU) and Mandalay Technical University (MTU).

* As part of the Ministry of Education's ODA program, Handong University has signed agreements with universities in developing countries, centering on the government's key partners, among the low-income countries classified by the World Bank, to strengthen each university’s capacity, and has established a regional base center in developing countries. Handong University is currently helping 62 universities and 16 institutions in 30 developing countries (as of December 2018).
