Ban Gi-Mun, 8th Secretary-General of UN, has received the Honorary Educational Technology Doctorate Degree in Handong Global University’s (President Chang Soon-Heung) 21st graduation ceremony that took place in 15th of February. Handong Global University has awarded the honorary doctorate degree to the 8th Secretary-General of UN, Ban Gi-Mun, for his dedication in fighting world poverty and protecting peace, and for his contributions in the enhancement of the culture of mankind and academics.
Former Secretary-General Ban Gi-Mun was appointed as the 8th Secretary-General of UN in 2007, reappointed in 2011, and holding office until 2016. During his office, world destitution ratio and infant mortality rate decreased significantly, while showing record-breaking numbers in women and child literacy ratio. Additionally, he was selected as one of 100 Global Thinkers for his contribution in achieving Accord de Paris in December 12th, 2015. Furthermore, he was appointed and is an acting chairman of the International Olympic Committee’s(IOC) Ethics Committee in 2017.
Especially, former Secretary-General Ban has taken initiative in spreading global citizen training and education development, working alongside with Handong Global University on UNAI* and UNITWIN** programs, which are directed towards supporting 3rd world developing countries, Ban has made a great contribution towards bolstering Handong Global University’s status in globalized education development.
Additionally, Handong Global University is constructing ‘Ban Gi-Mun UNAI center for global education’ in its campus in honor of former Secretary-General Ban’s contributions, which is expected to be completed in coming May. After being selected in 2011 as world’s 10 Hub Universities of UNAI, a leading institution in citizen education, Handong Global University continually strives for world citizen education and globalization training, reinforces cooperation with UN institutions through its ‘Ban Gi-Mun UNAI center for global education’, and plans to expand its world citizen education and globalization training.
Meanwhile, Handong University has been awarding its Honorary Doctorate Degrees to individuals who have made contributions to the enhancement of the culture of mankind and academics. The honorary doctorate has been awarded to Pastor Kim Jang-Hwan and President J. Bradley Creed of Campbell University in 2017, and to Abadula Gemeda Dago, Speaker of National Assembly of Ethiopia, and Church Elder Jang Eung-Bok in 2016.
Handong Global University has awarded 827 Bachelor’s, 153 Master’s, 6 Doctorates, and 1 Honorary Doctorate Degrees, accumulating to 987 degrees. Handong Global University celebrates its 24th anniversary this year, producing 13,026 Bachelor’s degree graduates, 1,948 Master’s degree graduates and 15 Doctors thus far.
* UNAI(UN Academic Impact) is a global program operating under UN, proposed by former Secretary-General Ban Gi-Mun in 2008 and formally launched in 2010, that aims to effectively achieve the Eight Millennium Development Goals established by the UN with education and research support from higher-education institutions worldwide.
** UNITWIN(University Twining and Networking) is a program created by UNESCO in 1992 with the goal of reducing the knowledge gap by supporting University education and research institutions through a network of Universities between advanced and developing countries, raising the self-sustaining capabilities of developing countries.
