Vice President Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr. of IOC received an honorary doctorate degree at Handong Global University (President Chang Soon-Heung).
Handong Global University conferred an honorary doctorate degree of law to Vice President Samaranch of IOC on ay 27th at UNAI Ban Ki-Moon IGE Conference Hall in recognition of his contribution to world peace and the fairness and purity of sports.
The conferment started with the welcoming speech of President Chang Soon-Heung of Handong Global University and was followed by congratulatory messages and recommendations of honorable guests, including former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, and words of appreciation (acceptance speech of degree) of Vice President Samaranch of IOC.

On this day, guests from Korea and foreign countries participated to congratulate the opening of HGU-UNAI Ban Ki-Moon IGE, and the conferment ceremony was held as Part 1 of the Opening Ceremony.
Vice President Samaranch of IOC, who received the honorary doctorate degree of law, said in his words of appreciation, “My father, the former President of IOC, exceedingly loved Korea during his days. He contributed greatly to the successful hosting of the 88th Seoul Olympics and to creating a peaceful atmosphere. He also contributed greatly to the simultaneous entry of the South and North Korean teams on the opening ceremony of 2000 Sydney Olympics. Even after the death of my father, I tried to realize the spirit of the Olympic for the restoration of inter-Korean relations as well as world peace by forming a unified South and North Korean team during the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.” He also stated, “I hope these efforts for peace will continue on until the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and I will personally put efforts myself as well, hoping that South and North Korea can co-host Olympics in 2032.”

Vice President Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr. of IOC is the son of the late Juan Antonio Samaranch, who served as the President of IOC for 20 years since 1980. Late former President Samaranch contributed to the development of the Olympics through projects such as changing the Olympic Games into a profit-making project and more.
President Chang Soon-Heung said, “I am truly grateful to welcome Vice President Samaranch of IOC who contributed to world peace through sports as Handong’s honorary doctor. In particular, he contributed greatly to the restoration of inter-Korean relations by forming a unified South and North Korean team on the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. I was deeply impressed by his movements of protecting and upholding the value of the Olympics by keeping what must be kept and boldly changing what needs innovations.
