Dr. Young-Gil Kim (Elder), the first president of Handong Global University has passed away at the age of 81.

Dr. Young-Gil Kim has passed away at 3 a.m. on June 30, 2019, at Sinchon Severance Hospital of Seoul, Republic of Korea.
Since May, he has been hospitalized and treated at Asan Medical Center of Seoul and Sinchon Severance Hospital of Seoul due to his chronic ailment.
Born on October 3, 1939, at Andong, Gyeongbuk Province, Dr. Kim graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Metal Engineering from Seoul National University and decided to continue his studies at Missouri State University with master’s degree in Metal Engineering, and finally received Doctorate Degree in Material Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
His previous careers include the first elder at Onnuri Church and first President of Handong Global University (from February 1995 to January 2014). Since June of 2016, he has been nominated as Honorary President of Handong Global University, working to greatly improve the University. He has served as a researcher at Louis Laboratory of NASA (May 1974 to May 1976), professor of Material Engineering at KAIST (1978 to 1995), first president of Korea Association of Creation Research (1981 to 1997) and Chairman of UN Academic Impact Korea (August 2012 until present).
He has been twice awarded Inventor's Award from NASA (1976 and 1981 respectively), and his manufacturing techniques of PMC-102, a Semiconductor Lead Frame developed in cooperation with Poongsan Corporation remains to be the first exported technique towards a developed country by Republic of Korea. He also has been awarded Dongbaek Medal in 1982, Sejong Culture Award in 1986, Scientist of the Year Award in 1987, Missions Award of Korean Christianity in Academic Field in 1999, The Fourth Academic Award in Korean Christianity in 2004, and Specialized Missions Award in 2014.
Since he moved from KAIST to Handong Global University in 1995 and becoming the first president of Handong Global University, he has presented a new model of education through innovative curriculum and education testing through character education based on Christian mind, thereby presenting the model of Education-Centered University.
He presented a motto of 'Study to Give Others' and 'Why Not Change the World?' to place Handong Global University on a rank of a prestigious private institution in a short period of time. He also has served as the 17th President of Korean Council for University Education (KCUE) and Chairman of Scientific Techniques Department at Presidential Advisory Council on Education, Science & Technology.
The Funeral Venue will be located at Special Room 1 of Sinchon Severance Hospital's Funeral Home and 3rd Floor of Hyoam Chapel Annex at Handong Global University. Condolence Calls will be accepted from 12 p.m. (Seoul) and 13 p.m. (Pohang) respectively on June 30. Heavenly Farewell Service will be conducted at 7 a.m. on July 2, 2019, at Seobinggo Chapel of Onnuri Church and 5 p.m. at Grace School of IGE at Handong Global University in Pohang on the same day.
