Handong Global University (President Jang Soon-heung) has decided to establish a Sejong Institute in the U.S., marking another step as a global university.
Handong Global University was selected to designate a new Sejong Institute in 2019 by the Sejong Institute Foundation under the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism. For the project, Handong Global University will establish Sejong Institute at Taylor University in Indiana at the end of August, specializing in Korean language and Korean culture.
Through the new designation of Sejong Institute, Handong Global University will play an important role in encouraging and spreading Korean language and cultural contents to American society. In particular, in the Midwest, where Taylor University is located, is a political and economic base of a predominantly conservative mainstream society, and cultural diversity is relatively lacking at present. This is one of the reasons why Handong Global University, which has proven its global capacities through various cases, has focused its attention on entering the U.S.
With the aim of “Globalizing Korean studies,” Handong Global University has established and operated a Global Korean Studies Major since December 2016. Currently, Handong Global University’s major in Global Korean Studies is equipped with curricula including Korean language, history, and culture education for foreign students, and promotes the emission of Korean language teachers.
Meanwhile, Taylor University is a private undergraduate university with more than 170 years of history and tradition, and has been engaged in active exchanges and cooperation with Handong Global University since 2010.
