HGU holds International Smart City Summer Camp in Myanmar

From July 22ndto August 2nd, Handong Global University (President Chang Soon-Heung) conducted a UNESCO UNITWIN joint program at the Office of Myanmar Architectural Heritage Organization in Myanmar.

 

The International Summer Studio Camp was held on the subject ‘Smart City Mandalay and Sustainable Development. For the joint education program, Professor Kim Joo-Ill and Prof. Seo Deok- Soo, representative of Belgium Essential Architecture Studio Hwang Uwi-Hyun, faculty members from Myanmar Mandalay Technological University, Professor Seo-Fyu from Technological Mandalay University, Professor Tuan from Vietnam Dongtuktang University joined as lecturers for the program. The lecture was on ‘Mandalay Smart City and Sustainable development.’

 

The participants of this program included professors and 44 students from HGU, Mandalay Technological University, Technology Mandalay University and Dongtuktankg University, and they were allocated into 5 groups. The lecture was held in a studio setting.

 

Particularly in this year, the international summer studio camp offered various lectures on the site analysis, architectural design and visualization, and smart city planning.  It also provided an opportunity for architectural and urban planning in developing countries based on the concept of smart city and field investigations. 

 

The President of Mandalay Technological University Sinso and the mayor of Mandalay Yeruwin attended the opening ceremony and presentation day showing support for this program.

Prof. Seo Deok-soo from HGU said, “It must have been a great opportunity for undergraduate students who are going to be the future leaders in Myanmar. They were able to come up with a practical solution for smart city and sustainable development,” And he added, “I hope students will be able to solve various social issues in Myanmar as they continue to embody the plans into a practice.”

A student from Mandalay Technological University Nan Heu Tuo said, “It was a great time that students from Korea and Vietnam jointly participated in studio during the camp. It was a new learning opportunity for us to gain new knowledge and experience as we work together, and I have become more confident.” Also, he added, “I learned a wide array of perspectives and insights on issues that Mandalay and Myanmar are facing now. I was able to think through how such lessons I learned can be practically applied in Mandalay setting. This camp will be a great foundation as we continue to construct a better future in Myanmar.”

*Since the invention in 1992 by UNESCO, the UNITWIN is a program which aims at promoting the sustainable development and capacity of universities in developing countries through networking between universities of developed countries and those of developing. UNESCO designated HGU the first Korean UNITWIN partner in 2017. 

 

*The Handong Global University-UNITWIN service, which is part of the Ministry of Education’s ODA service, by concluding agreements with universities from developing countries that are categorized by the World Bank as low-income countries and are the Korean government’s key-cooperating partners, has pursued the strengthening of the universities’ potential, fostering of leaders, local development, etc. and constructed local base centers within the developing countries. Handong Global University is currently supporting 62 universities and 16 institutions in 30 countries (as of Dec. 2018).
