Handong Global University (President Dosoung Choi) has a unique social service program, the ‘Miracle 100,000 Won Project,’ which has been revived for the first time in 3 years since the outbreak of COVID-19. As a result of the pandemic, all external team activities were completely suspended, but the program now resumed according to the complete lifting of the social distancing policy.

The Miracle 100,000 Won project is a program that combines HGU’s unique team system and social service activities. When student teams submit volunteer service ideas that they’ve developed on their own, the school provides seed money for the project. Students of different grades and majors form teams to carry out projects and creative volunteer activities in areas where our neighbors and society need help.

During one semester, students experience the entire process of finding areas that need problem-solving, fundraising to raise seed money, and personally providing help to those in need. Through this experience, students learn how rewarding it can be to use their talents and major-related capacilties to help their neighbors, as well as the ability to collaborate with communities and teams to achieve common goals.

Professor Sang-hwa Lee’s team planned the Re-fruiting project to help farmers in Pohang who were affected by Typhoon Hinnamnor. It was a profit-making business that bought fruits fallen from the typhoon, made them into apple cider, and sold them. By buying fallen fruits that could not be commercialized and transforming them into apple cider, the team hoped to console the hearts of Pohang citizens and help them bear fruit again. Students wrote 120 handwritten letters containing the meaning of this project and delivered them to to buyers, and all proceeds were donated to Pohang City Hall to help recover typhoon damage.

Mr. Geon Kang (School of ICT and Entrepreneurship, male, 25), a student who participated in the project, said, “We stand here with Pohang citizens who are suffering from typhoon damage. We want to comfort you and send you a message that we empathize. Even though it is a small amount, and the message of our project may not reach many people, we wanted to show that we really love Pohang and that Handong Global University will deliver love.”

Meanwhile Ms. Soyeong Kim (Global Leadership School, female, 20), a freshman student who participated in the project, said, “When we began this project, I wasn’t sure everything would work out. But things went much better than I expected. I hope we all come to realize that people are much more interested in doing good than we expect sometimes. I hope this leads them to do even small acts of kindness right away without hesitation.”

The 100,000 Won Project started when the students who won the Team Vitalization Idea Contest held by the HGU Student Government donated their prize money. About 100 teams annually participate in this student-led social service project, which started in 2004 with the donated prize money and HGU’s matching fund.
