As the economic burden of college students increases due to soaring prices every day, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs’ 1,000 won breakfast is receiving great acclaim. As a project jointly supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and universities, if a student pays 1,000 won, the government pays 1,000 won, and the university pays the rest. This year, 41 universities across the country, including Seoul National University, Kyungpook National University, and Pohang University of Science and Technology were selected and are enjoying the benefits, but even such a good cost-effective breakfast can be a huge burden for small regional universities. Nevertheless, in the midst of this, the case of Handong Global University, which provides meals for 100 won instead of 1,000 won, stands out.
Handong University initiated the "Handong Manna" project in 2016, which has been ongoing for over eight years. The project aims to support economically disadvantaged students by providing them with meals and has successfully served approximately 59,000 meals to date. The name "Manna" is derived from the biblical story of the Israelites, who received sustenance from God in the form of heavenly food, known as Manna and quail, during their journey through the wilderness after leaving Egypt. Initially supported by a parent sponsor, the Handong Meeting project has expanded to receive donations from various sources, including general sponsors, alumni, students, and alumni associations.
There is a special reason why Handong Manna is unique. Although it is available to everyone, not everyone utilizes it. According to the "Honor Code," which students pledge to uphold upon admission, students use Handong Manna by prioritizing and considering those who are truly in need, ensuring that the benefits are shared with those who require them the most. Even for international students who come from developing countries to study in Korea and experience campus life, a 100-won meal from Handong Manna becomes a significant source of strength amidst the challenges of living in a foreign land. It allows them to not only overcome the difficulties of adjusting to a new culture but also experience the beauty of campus life. An anonymous student who used Handong Manna expressed their gratitude, saying, "Due to a significant drop in my family's income ranking for national scholarships, I faced economic difficulties and found it hard to ask my parents for money. In such circumstances, on days when I had no money and felt reluctant to eat ramen, being able to have a fulfilling meal was truly appreciated." To provide more benefits to regular students, Handong University has introduced the "President's Recommended Rice Soup" menu since last year. It is offered at the on-campus cafeteria (Mom's Kitchen) for 2,500 won. This initiative aims to ensure that students do not have to cut back on meals due to living expense concerns.
President Do Soung Choi expressed his vision for the project, stating, "I hope that students can enjoy a warm and comforting meal, just like home-cooked food, without any financial burden. Along with Handong Manna, I hope it can become a delicious and affordable signature menu at Handong Global University."
