On June 17, 2025, Handong Global University (President Dosoung Choi) hosted a showcase highlighting the achievements of the Systems and Society course, which was co-developed and delivered in collaboration with Minerva Project during the Spring 2025 semester. The event was attended by the course’s teaching team (Professors Changwook Kim, Semee Kim, and Bryan Alkema) and 51 enrolled students, who shared their learning journeys and final project results.

“Systems and Society” is a liberal arts course designed to help students understand complex social systems through the lens of complex systems theory. LLike other Minerva-based courses at Handong, the course was delivered through Forum, Minerva’s online learning platform, and used a Fully Active Learning model, with students taking the lead in discussions and analysis rather than relying on traditional lectures.

Throughout the semester, students worked in teams to analyze real-world social issues such as South Korea’s ultra-low fertility rate, identity dissociation in the digital age, and field-of-study and job mismatches. For each topic, they examined how the issue functions within a broader system, analyzed its limitations, and proposed innovative solutions.

During the showcase, student teams presented the outcomes of their work, demonstrating how they applied systems thinking to uncover the structural dynamics behind each issue and suggested alternative responses based on their analyses.

Seajin Um (Global Leadership School, Class of 2025), one of the students who participated in the course, shared. “Through this course, I was able to structurally analyze complex real-world issues and explore meaningful solutions. It was a valuable and eye-opening experience.” Professor Semee Kim (School of Law) added, “I was impressed to see students move beyond theory and develop the capacity to interpret social phenomena structurally and generate their own solutions.”

Since Fall 2024, Handong Global University has partnered with Minerva Project to co-design and implement innovative curriculum models. In the upcoming Fall 2025 semester, two existing courses, <Introduction to Studies in Education> and <AI, Culture and Art Project>, will be redesigned and offered based on the Minerva model.
